报告摘要

Development of fusion energy becomes increasingly urgent to satisfy the worldwide demand for clean energy. A turning point has now occurred with scientific and technological innovations in synergy with advances in artificial intelligence. In addition to the mainline tokamak research, great progress has been made on alternative fusion concepts, as exemplified by recent progress in magneto-inertial fusion through dynamically merging and compressing hyper-sonic compact toroids, named Field Reversed Configurations (FRCs), with the ion temperature reaching 100 million degrees. Of all magnetic confinement concepts, the FRC exhibits the highest beta (ratio of plasma to magnetic pressure ~ 100%), allowing for the most efficient use of magnet hardware. The FRC, while being predominantly a diamagnetic entity without external toroidal fields, has nevertheless demonstrated extreme robustness and ability to survive violent colliding and merging processes, with tendency to assume a preferred minimum energy state. These features, coupled with its linear exhaust capability, make the FRC a highly attractive candidate for a compact fusion reactor and deep-space propulsion. Moreover, the FRC offers a test bed for exploring phenomena missing from the standard MHD model, such as high-beta, large-ion-orbit and two-fluid effects, as well as relaxation to “natural” states and reconnection. This presentation discusses the unique properties of FRCs, and potential pathways to accelerate the development of small-scale, distributed fusion energy.

美国物理学会会士(APS Fellow)、中国国家特聘专家、上海市未来产业先进核能专家委员会副主任。曾长期代表美国能源部负责中、美核聚变合作研究计划;曾担任中国磁约束专家组成员、国际热核聚变实验堆(ITER)科学技术咨询委员会专家、国际偏滤器及边缘等离子体物理专题组组长等。曾在位于英国的全球最大的JET托卡马克担任偏滤器再循环专题组组长,实验负责人;创立美国最大的国家磁约束聚变研究计划DIII-D托卡马克边界等离子体及材料研究中心,并担任主任;在美国最大的新概念聚变(场反位形)能源发展公司TAE担任首席实验战略家/首席科学家、实验运行部负责人;在华盛顿大学负责美国能源部最大的场反位形研究计划。2010年入选中组部国家海外高层次人才(QR计划),在中科院等离子体所兼任托卡马克研究验室主任、所长特别助理。 从先进托卡马克研究到创新聚变概念探索,为聚变能的科学和发展做出了许多开创性贡献,400余篇研究成果发表于Nature Physics, Nature Communications, National Science Review, Physical Review Letters等国际著名学术期刊。
